FED: Road rage a new hazard for road repair gangs

A safety expert says road workers are being exposed to the increasing hazard of violence
and verbal abuse from angry motorists.

The head of the Safety Institute's technical committee, GEOFF BRENNAN, told a national
safety conference the threat of being hit by a passing vehicle was also a concern.

He and two other state health department officers looked at the safety of road workers in
16 organisations engaged in construction, maintenance and traffic control.

Mr BRENNAN says the effects of violence upon road workers from passing traffic rates highly
as a hazard, with workers also facing verbal abuse and the destruction of property.

The annual Safety Institute of Australia conference is being held in Cairns.

It's a nationally recognised forum for occupational health and safety professionals,
students and managers.
